How to Apply

Consultants who work in the Centers take a three-semester sequence of one-credit (1 hour/week) pedagogy courses based on their subject area interests. To apply, simply enroll in WRIT 2001 (the Writing Center training course) or EDUC 2031 (the CASE/subject area training course). Both courses are offered every Spring semester. Students who successfully complete WRIT 2001 or EDUC 2031 are then invited to join the staff the following Fall semester.

Pedagogical Training Is a Major Experience

After completing WRIT 2001 or EDUC 2031, newly hired consultants continue to meet weekly for ongoing pedagogical education and professional development for their first year of employment. In the Fall semester, students employed as Writing Consultants enroll in WRIT 3001 and students employed as Academic Consultants enroll in EDUC 3031.

In the spring, both Writing and Academic Consultants come together to complete their final semester of training by enrolling in WRIT 4001/EDUC 4031, a pedagogical research methods course. Together, these three courses support consultants as they identify what best practices for mentoring are, why those practices are valued, and how to contribute new ideas and innovations to the scholarly field of writing and learning pedagogy.

Completing this three-semester sequence and spending two semesters successfully employed as a consultant in the Centers can count for your Major Experience, the experiential learning graduation requirement at Millsaps.

Writing Fellows, Academic Fellows, and Pathways Peers

All students serving as Writing Fellows, Academic Fellows, and Pathways Peers are selected from within the staff of the Centers. Serving as Fellow or Pathways Peer means being embedded within a specific course and working closely with the faculty/staff teaching that course to support enrolled students. These are impactful opportunities to spend time with your peers over the course of a semester and to build meaningful relationships with the faculty and staff who teach them.

Hours and Rate of Pay

Academic Consultants earn the highest published pay tier available at Millsaps, which is currently $11/hour in the first year and $12/hour after one year of employment.

Hours are flexible within the operating schedule of the Centers. Typically the Centers are open across all locations between 3pm-9pm Sundays through Thursdays, though this is subject to change as student use patterns fluctuate. Most consultants work 2-4 hours per week at the Centers, though some choose to work more hours and others fewer hours. Athletes are highly encouraged to work at the Centers to serve as “on the road” consultants to teammates.
